The Nature of Nurture explores the history and roots of my lineage, delving into the connections and ties that bring my family together. For it is not blood that is the connecting factor of these relationships, it is nurture. The photography explores an attachment to a long line of history, that my mum and indirectly I, do not share the same blood as. However, there’s an adoration and familiarity that I feel toward these people, some that now only exist as a name or a photograph.
There’s a deep-rooted history that connects us to the land, that is not only inherited but treasured as an heirloom. Throughout this work I observe and capture moments as my mum relives memories of childhood and belonging to a place and a time. She takes me on a journey of discovering our roots in which I form a deeper connection to the people we call family. I reflect on legacy and where I fall in this line, I am a product of everyone who came before me and am only the start of what is to come next.
